Why are American politics all about right vs left?

darkshadows81 asked:

Every other question about American politics I read here at the moment seems to be about the political left and right. Since the election of Barrack Obama, Americans seem to be either conservatives or liberals and nothing in between with one side fiercely disagreeing with the other on just about everything.
It struck me that the UK used to be very much like this (especially in the 60s/70s and 80s) where supporters of the left or right could be very clearly identified by being a conservative or labour voter. Again, both sides often disagreeing so strongly, sometimes to the point of physical violence. As time has gone by though, both the conservative and (new) labour party have now adopted a much more middle ground approach till the point that some say they can no longer be distinguished in their policies. For better or worse, it feels like the UK (and perhaps most of Europe?) has very much moved on from the black and white (no pun intended) world of “right vs left” which seems to grip our cousins across the Atlantic at the moment.

As America is one of the youngest countries in the world and therefore still growing a democracy, I wonder, is the “right vs left” phase some kind of inevitable stage within the evolution of democracy? If so, can you think of other countries where this phase has come and gone?…and if so what comes next (perhaps voter apathy as we have started to see in the UK?) Sensible, thoughtful answers appreciated!
